Campers Church

The Oliphant Campers Church was established in the summer of 1906. It has operated continuously since that time as an interdenominational ecumenically based seasonal meeting place for worship and fellowship during the months of July and August. The church has served, over the years, as a centre for spiritual fellowship, a form of “community centre” for the residents, both in the summer and at other times. It has also served each year as the planning centre for the Oliphant Campers’ Association for its annual Regatta activities and storage for Regatta trophies / memorabilia.

Oliphant Campers’ Church Fall 2024 Report

The end of August saw the conclusion of the 119th season of Oliphant Campers’ Church, one of Oliphant’s most enduring traditions. The church was built in 1906 by early members of the Oliphant Campers Association, to be a gathering place for summer worship and fellowship. For several generations the church has served as a community centre and an annual meeting place for activities and awards for the OCA’s annual Oliphant Regatta. There are eight or nine weekly church services each summer in July and August with uplifting, spiritual messages delivered by a rotation of ministers from various Christian denominations, who are residents from the Oliphant/Sauble area.

The OCC also hosted two musical concerts this past summer - Father Mark Curtis, also known as Canada’s Singing Priest, in July and a string quartet concert from the Music on the Bruce series in August. The church is also available for weddings and other ceremonies in July and August.

The Oliphant Campers’ Church is proud to sponsor the Rev. Robert Scoon Scholarship in memory of the Anglican minister, and Cranberry Island cottager, who preached here for many summers. The scholarship is awarded annually  to deserving post-secondary students, majoring in a field where service to people is predominant (Social Services, Education, Religious Studies, Cultural Arts).

The OCC Board is excited to announce that there are two successful candidates for this year’s Scoon Scholarship. Each of the successful candidates received $750.00 towards their post-secondary education.

Tori Holland and Marlee Palinkas, both with strong ties to Oliphant, will both be continuing their education at Teachers College with the goal of becoming professional educators. Congratulations to Tori and Marlee and best of luck in your continuing education!
